Overview of the course

Gain the essential skills and knowledge required for male and female urinary catheterisation. This course combines theoretical learning with hands-on practice to ensure you are fully prepared for competency sign-off in your practice setting.  

Competency assessment must be achieved post-course through supervised practice with an experienced practitioner. 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will: 

  • Understand the purpose, indications, and contraindications of urinary catheterisation. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant anatomy and physiology. 
  • Select appropriate equipment and materials for catheterisation. 
  • Apply infection prevention and control measures, including hand hygiene and personal protective equipment. 
  • Perform systematic catheter insertion techniques for both male and female patients. 
  • Prepare patients and obtain informed consent. 
  • Identify and manage complications and troubleshoot issues. 
  • Provide post-procedure care and monitoring.
