Overview of the course

Our Intravenous Cannulation Course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for safe and  effective intravenous cannulation. This comprehensive training covers the anatomy  and physiology of veins, the selection of appropriate equipment, infection control  measures, and the management of potential complications. Through interactive lectures and hands-on practice using simulation equipment, participants will gain  confidence and competence in performing cannulation procedures. This course is  ideal for both beginners and those seeking to refresh their skills, ensuring high  standards of patient care and safety. 

Competency assessment must be achieved post-course through supervised practice  with an experienced practitioner. 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Understand the principles and purpose of intravenous cannulation.
  • Identify the anatomy and physiology of veins relevant to cannulation.
  • Select appropriate equipment and materials for cannulation. 
  • Apply infection prevention and control measures effectively. 
  • Demonstrate proper hand hygiene and use of Personal Protective Equipment  (PPE). 
  • Prepare patients for cannulation and obtain informed consent.
  • Perform cannulation techniques confidently and safely.
  • Identify and manage complications and troubleshoot issues during the  procedure. 
  • Provide post-procedure care and monitoring to ensure patient safety.
