Overview of the course

The Introduction to Stoma Care Course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in stoma care. This course covers the essentials of stoma management, patient education, and the latest advancements in stoma care techniques.  

Competency assessment must be achieved post-course through supervised practice with an experienced practitioner. 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology related to stoma formation; including types of surgery and reasons why stomas are created. 
  • Identify different types of stomas and their specific care requirements. 
  • Perform stoma care procedures with confidence and competence. 
  • Educate patients and their families on stoma management and lifestyle adjustments. 
  • Signpost onwards for further care or with complications. 

Course lead

The course is led by Michelle Goffey, a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Stoma Care. Michelle is an experienced nurse and is passionate about teaching and improving patient care through education.
